Awards up for grabs – Fiji Times Online

THREE nominees vying for the Artist of the Year Award will headline the 2016 Fiji Performing Rights Association Music Awards at the Grand Pacific Hotel on May 14.

They are Voqa ni Delai Dokidoki, Nasio Domoni and solo artist Savuto who won the best iTaukei song award in 2015.

The trio will join about 50 other musicians vying for 14 awards.

Other major awards up for grabs on the night are Best Composition (or Best Song), Best New Artist, Most Popular Music Video and Most Popular Song.

Fiji Performing Rights Association publicist Lice Movono-Rova yesterday said some familiar names were making a comeback to the FPRA awards.

“Some of the frontrunners include Elena Baravilala who is nominated for two awards, both premier awards — Best English Composition and Best Song.”
Commonly compared with Whitney Houston given her soulful original songs, the 27-year-old sings about tough times in romance, in her newest release entitled You Got You.

“The band’s original number Na veikilai lekaleka mosimosi, a title track from their third album is making a play for Best iTaukei Composition, Best Song and has earned them a spot in the race for Artist of the Year.”

Polynesian Band Rako Pasefika — better known for their dancing — has also arrived on the music scene in a big way being nominated for Best Song, Best New Artist and Best English Song.

“Inside Out is another frontrunner. The Suva band, fronted by Apakuki Nalawa has made its name on Suva’s live music scene and they’re on the nominees list in several ways,” Mrs Movono-Rova said.
